An afternoon of flair, fun, pirates and poetry

BUDDING poets, writers, bookworms, lovers of words and the like are invited to a jamboree that's certain to tickle your fancy and excite your interest.

The Poets and Pirates long-table lunch is the final event of the Whitsunday Writers Festival which will be held at the Whitsunday Marine Club (VMR) next Sunday, October 12 and tickets are on sale now.

The long-table lunch will feature a delicious hog roast lunch, live music to dance to and readings and recitals from local poets including Whitsunday Times and Whitsunday Coast Guardian managing editor Leanne Abernethy.

'What do poets and pirates have in common?' is the question the Whitsunday Writers Festival committee encourages locals to start thinking about but will only reveal their answer on the day.

Committee member and marine writer Daniel 'Captain Dan' Van Blarcom said pirate costumes are recommended to give the whole event some extra flair.

Mr Van Blarcom said the event is a great way to meet like-minded locals and hopes it will spark frequent poetry gatherings in the region.

Whitsunday Writers' Festival founder Gloria Burley promises an afternoon of pure delight for those of all walks of life.

"If you enjoyed the Shag Islet Regatta weekend you will love the Poets and Pirates afternoon. It will serve as the closing ceremony to the wonderful Whitsunday Writers Festival weekend and we encourage all local to come along and get involved," she said.

Tickets and day passes are on sale now at Whitsunday Tickets and the entire festival program is online at http://www.whitsundaywritersfestival.com
