Aussie audiences hip to the Martin & Short brand
COMEDY legends Steve Martin and Martin Short were initially worried their show wouldn't translate well in Australia - but audiences have quashed that fleeting fear.
The pair, who became instant friends while on set of the 1986 comedy Three Amigos, touched down in Brisbane yesterday ahead of their Now You See Them, Soon You Won't show.
In typical Martin and Short style, the pair finished off each other's sentences and poked fun and one another while being interviewed by The Courier-Mail.
Martin hasn't been Down Under since 1992, and Short hasn't visited since 2011 - but they have enjoyed the warm welcome from Australian audiences so far, and even managed to sneak some koala time straight after landing in Brisbane.
"It's been fantastic, the audience has been great," Martin said. "We were a little nervous coming here, because you don't know if your show is going to translate or what's going to be different and we did some new material for Australia, and it all seems to work fine. It's hard to select material for another country."
They've been travelling for their show for about five years, admitting they pick up on each other's speech rhythms and "little lingos" along the way. But in terms of having a 30-year friendship combined with a winning professional partnership, the secret to making it work is quite simple: "having a sense of humour" and "respect of each other".
And their genuine chemistry is evident when they take the stage.
"We like to make each other laugh, we think of funny things, we always have something to talk about, and gossiping," Martin joked.
"I think that also it's like any aspect of life, you have a long friendship with someone because you have mutual friends, you have similarities - but you also respect that person and their morality," Short said.
From their show tonight, Brisbanites can expect a lot of laughter, which is the main goal for Martin and Short.
