Avatar finally loses top spot

Amid the flurry of announcements from Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige at San Diego Comic-Con has this little gem that Avengers fans will be very, very pleased about.

Avengers: Endgame has finally surpassed Avatar as the biggest movie in the history of the world.

The superhero extravaganza has eked out a small lead over James Cameron's 3D blue people after three months in release.

Avengers: Endgame has, as of this moment, grossed $US2.790 billion, dethroning Avatar's record of $US2.789 billion. It's the last hurdle for Endgame, which stormed out of the gates, breaking numerous records in its first days of release.

With feverish excitement for the Marvel blockbuster, fans flocked early to see Endgame, which meant its gargantuan box office was quite front-loaded. It only took Endgame five days to make it to $US1 billion, and 11 days to get to $US2 billion.

It overtook Titanic as the second biggest movie of all time after 12 days.

But Avatar's record proved elusive. It would take another two and half months to make up the $US500 million between Titanic and Avatar.

Endgame's record is based on box office receipts unadjusted for inflation. On that measure, Victor Fleming's 1939 epic Gone with the Wind still reigns.

Endgame's victory came after Marvel bosses re-released the film into cinemas with extra footage as an enticement for fans to buy another ticket.

Endgame was boosted by a ginormous box office in China ($US614 million), which has seen healthy growth over the past decade to become the world's second largest cinema market.

Avatar also had a re-release in 2010 which added $US33.2 million to its total box office, and Avatar benefited from a higher average ticket price because of 3D and IMAX sessions.

After the merger of 20th Century Fox (which owns Avatar) and Disney, the house of mouse now owns both Marvel and Avatar properties. Either way, it's a win for Disney.

In Australia, Endgame has made $84 million and is sitting at the top of the local box office for the year so far.

Endgame broke Australian records for pre-sales, highest opening weekend and highest opening week, but still sits in third place for the all-time record behind Avatar and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Endgame was the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's "Infinity Saga", the 22nd movie in a franchise.

Yesterday, Feige revealed the next 10 projects in the MCU with a star-studded panel at Comic-Con, including confirmation of a Doctor Strange sequel, Thor sequel, Black Widow stand-alone, The Eternals movie, Shang-Chi movie and five Disney+ TV shows.
