Ayr product Karrie Webb filled with pride of north
WHICH of these two north Queensland sporting legends earns the most money?
If you said North Queensland Cowboys co-captain Johnathan Thurston, you were wrong.
Thurston is one of rugby league's highest-paid players, but golfer Karrie Webb (pictured with Thurston) is nudging $20 million in career earnings from 41 international wins, and that's without any sponsorship endorsements.
Webb, who will celebrate her 40th birthday tomorrow, rocked up at Cowboys training in Townsville to meet the players during a break from her heavy USLPGA Tour schedule to spend Christmas at home with her family in Ayr.
Thurston, a mad-keen golfer, and Matt Scott presented Webb with a Cowboys jumper during the training session which she watched with her two nieces and nephew.
"Being born and bred in Ayr (a sugar town south of Townsville with a population of about 8000) and having lived in north Queensland all my life, I'm a huge Cowboys fan and a proud Queenslander," said Webb, who finished 2014 back in the world's top 10.
Despite playing tournament golf all-year round, Webb keeps tabs on the NRL and Queensland's progress in the State of Origin series.
"I do the tipping competition with my family. I don't get to watch a lot of the games but it lets me keep up with who is doing what and I've got the Cowboys app on my phone, so I can keep up with what the boys are doing," said Australia's most successful golfer with seven major tournament wins to her name.
Webb is such a staunch Cowboys supporter when she lost a bet to fellow Australian player Sarah Kemp in 2013, she wore a Cronulla Sharks jumper during a practice round earlier this year.
It will be Kemp's turn to don a Cowboys jumper, though.
"I got her back this year because we beat Cronulla both times," Webb said.
Webb hinted she would scale her golf back in a few years and hopefully get to some Cowboys games in the winter.
"I've got two more years of full-time on the road around the world until the 2016 (Rio) Olympics and then, hopefully, I will wind down a little bit," she said.
"Hopefully I will still play a little bit but not quite as much and I'll be here in the winter.''
No prizes for guessing who her favourite Cowboys player is. "You've got to love JT (Thurston), don't you?" she said with a laugh.
