A LOCAL boxer's pursuit of representing Australia at the Youth Commonwealth Games will begin this weekend.

Jake Brown will contest the Boxing Australia Queensland Selection Trials at Acacia Ridge over the weekend with his Youth games ambition in the back of his mind.

The 16-year-old will contest three or four fights in the light welterweight (60kg) division in the hope of gaining state representation for the national titles later this year.

"If I win Queensland titles I will be representing the Queensland team, which will go away and fight around Australia and maybe overseas before the Australian titles," he said.

"If I win at the Australian titles I get to go to Samoa for the Youth Commonwealth Games. I've won three Australian titles but they couldn't take me further because I was too young. Now I'm old enough to go away."

Jake, a student at Whitsunday Christian College, will still be at the bottom-end of the age scale but he is determined to achieve his goal, even if it is against fighters three years older. "I'm pretty confident. I've prepared my best and been training really hard," he said.
