Caravan show takes Conway Beach through a 'time warp'

IT IS possible for caravans to travel back in time.

This is the belief of Peter McPhee, who feels like he is back in the 1960s every time he walks into his 1967 Chesney Regal Caravan, which was on show at the Vintage and Retro Vans Show at Conway Beach Tourist Park on Saturday.

Since Mr McPhee and his wife, Patricia, first picked their caravan up six months ago, they have gone to meticulous lengths to ensure its original feel endures for years to come.

"We have been renewing the inside as much as possible to keep it original,” he said.

"A lot of caravans have had their interiors changed dramatically with the black and white look inside.

"With this one, when you walk inside you go back into the 1960s. You go inside and think, wow, this is like stepping back in time.”

This wasn't the only gem on display to the public.

Steven Kirk said his 1978 tandem axle Olympic Stardust van was one of only 1200 built in Australia.

Mr Kirk said while the vehicle had performed well in previous contests, it was the people he got to meet around the country that made him passionate about caravans.

"It's all about the people you meet, who are marvellous,” he said.

"Wherever you go all like-minded people have a great time, going to caravan parks gives a point of difference, everyone comes out and wants to have a look at it (the caravan) and it's just fun.”

Conway Beach Tourist Park owner George Pauly said the competition was exactly what the area needed to get the local economy "going again” following Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

"This is the first (Vintage and Retro Vans Show) we have had and we have already had confirmation from a club from Bribie Island that they will come back next year with another 10-12 caravans,” he said.

"People have been good coming out here to support us.”

Caravan owners competed for prizes across three categories - Best Interior, Best Caravan and People's Choice.
