Carnival-themed run a first in Airlie

FOR the first time in the event's history, Airlie Beach Race Week is including a fun run in its on-shore activities.

It is also the first time the Whitsunday Running Club has been involved in an evening event.

The fun run will be on Sunday, August 14, at 5.30pm and will land runners at Race Week central at 6.30pm in time to catch the set from the Mason Rack Band.

President of the Whitsunday Running Club, Tim Oberg, said the event would be a true "fun run," as there would be no winners and no losers.

As the fun run will coincide with the Olympic Games in Rio, the theme of the run will be the Rio Carnival festival.

Mr Oberg said not everyone had a sequined or feathered outfit lying around the house so participants were also encouraged to dress in Olympic attire if they preferred.

"We are very excited to be working with the Whitsunday Sailing Club to bring this event to the local community," he said.

"This will be the first twilight fun run ever held in Airlie Beach and we think our beautiful winter climate is perfectly suited to seeing athletes of all ages and abilities participating."

Entries will soon be available online at the Whitsunday Running Club's website or abrw.com.au

The event is free.
