Crocodiles on the agenda at LNP State Convention

INDEPENDENT Whitsunday MP Jason Costigan says he "won't hold his breath” over a bid to remove saltwater crocodiles from the Queensland endangered species list.

Hinchinbrook State Electorate Council has put forward the motion to be considered at this weekend's LNP State Convention.

Mr Costigan, who has been a staunch supporter of crocodile culling in North Queensland, said his previous calls for the LNP to firm up a position on the issue as a matter of urgency had gone "in one ear and out the other”.

"If I were an LNP member in the electorate of Hinchinbrook or anywhere else in North Queensland, I wouldn't be holding by breath,” he said.

"We have seen south-east Queensland Liberals pretending there are no problems with crocs in North Queensland.

"I never wanted to wipe out the species, all I wanted to do was thin out the numbers and put public safety at the top of the list of priorities.”

Mr Costigan repeated the calls in May, warning there would be "blood on our beaches” unless action was taken after two crocodiles were spotted at beaches in the Mackay region.

He said he was "gobsmacked” after a crocodile was spotted beyond the waves at Bucasia Beach and again when a three-metre long crocodile slithered onto the sand at Mackay Harbour Beach the next day.

Mr Costigan called on Environment Minister Leeanne Enoch to introduce sustainable culling of crocodiles in northern waterways.

But Ms Enoch said calls for a cull were a misguided attempt to gain attention, while spreading fear about the region's natural environment.

She also defended Queensland's crocodile management plan, saying it "maintains public safety as the highest priority”.

"A cull is not a solution to the risks posed by crocodiles - it would give the public a false sense of safety, leading to complacency and an increased risk of attacks,” she said.

"It does not matter how many crocodiles are removed, no waterway in crocodile country can ever be considered to be crocodile free.”

The motion is one of more than 100 to go before the weekend's LNP State Convention.
