Death Star dessert a sweet ending for Charlie on MasterChef
GOLFER Charlie Sartori has bowed out of MasterChef in the surprising result of tonight's pressure test.
The avid home cook, who loves making desserts, seemed perfectly suited to handling the pressures of pastry chef Anna Polyviou's tricky Anna's Mess, also known as the 'Death Star of Desserts'.
The white chocolate dome dish, containing a colourful array of elements inside, is designed to be dropped from height when served to create an artistic splatter of strawberry coulis and meringue.
"I'm definitely a lot stronger in the sweets and it's right up my alley, but we're getting to that point in the competition where one or two little things can send you home," Sartori told APN.
Queensland bartender Harry Foster was the underdog in the three-hour challenge, up against Sartori and fellow dessert lover Elise Franciskovic.
"We all got it completed... it all came down to who read the recipe the best and who worked the best under pressure," he said.
"We were all really happy and we knew whoever went would hold their head high."
Despite his elimination, the 24-year-old said the Death Star dish has inspired him to retire from golfing and become a pastry chef.
"We'd been slogging away for three hours and when I pulled the dome out (of its mould) it really hit me," he said
"In that moment I realised this is what I want to do. I want to make pastries and sweets."
Polyviou was so impressed with Sartori she has offered him work experience in her kitchen at Sydney's Shangri-La Hotel.
"I'm heading up there in the next month or so," he said.
"I'm looking forward to it a lot."
Like many of the previously eliminated contestants, he tips Noosa coffee roaster Matt Sinclair as the cook to beat.
"He was one of the people I was closest with in the house," he said.
"I learned so much about him. He's one of the most passionate people about food and he has such a great knowledge base. He just seems to get it; he just knows food."
