Elton’s ex-wife launches legal action 32 years after divorce

Elton John's ex-wife has reportedly launched legal action against the music legend, 32 years after they divorced.

Renate Blauel, who was married to the star for four years, is reportedly seeking an injunction against her ex-husband.

Blauel met John while he was recording the album Too Low for Zero in 1983 and they married on Valentine's Day at a Sydney church the following year while he was on tour in Australia.

But the marriage would end acrimoniously in 1988 after John publicly came out as gay.

According to The Sun, the reason for the legal action is unclear but injunctions usually relate to privacy matters or to block information being made public.

John is named on the court papers, with Blauel's lawyer saying she is "hoping to resolve it amicably".

The reason for the injunction application is not clear, but this approach is reportedly taken in relation to privacy matters or to prevent publication of material.

The star later married partner David Furnish in a civil partnership in 2005 after a 12-year relationship and the pair have two sons together.

German-born Blauel has remained fiercely private since the split and has never spoken publicly about her relationship with the icon. She was portrayed in by actress Celinde Schoenmaker in last year's blockbuster Rocketman based on the star's life.

In his best-selling autobiography, the star spoke about his divorce and his struggle with his sexuality.

He also revealed he has limited contact with his ex-wife, who turned down an offer to meet his children.

He wrote: "I'd broken the heart of someone I loved and who loved me unconditionally, someone I couldn't fault in any way.

"Despite all the pain, there was no acrimony involved at all. For years afterwards, whenever something happened to me, the press would turn up on her doorstep, looking for her to dish the dirt, and she never, ever has: she told them to leave her alone."
