Warning: severe weather to hit north Qld today
Severe weather warnings are in place for much of the North Queensland coast with damaging winds and heavy rainfall from ex-Tropical Cyclone Penny forecast for later today.
Now a tropical low, ex-Cyclone Penny was recorded as being 720km east-northeast off the coast of Bowen just before 6am.

Coastal areas from Alva Beach to Sarina are on high alert, with six hourly rainfall totals of between 140mm and 180mm forecast from this evening into tomorrow morning.
The Bureau warned heavy rainfall in the areas affected could lead to flash flooding.
Damaging winds with peak gusts of around 90km per hour may develop over the Whitsunday Islands area tonight or tomorrow morning.
