GOLFERS REJOICE: Opening of new course just days away

GOLFERS will be out in force when a nine-hole golf course opens in Cannonvale next weekend.

The Whitsunday Green nine-hole golf course will open on Sunday, June 28, with a non-profit community club part of its core offering.

The opening was slated for March but has been prolonged due to COVID-19 and the weather.

Club membership is open to those who want to participate in competitions and social events and the member register will open on Sunday.

Project director Stephen Head said the company was still forging ahead with an over-55s lifestyle community, with plans due to be submitted this year and building due to start after the next wet season.

More houses on Spyglass Hill, behind the driving range, are also planned, in conjunction with GJ Gardener.

"It has taken a long time to get to stage one," Mr Head said.

"Because of COVID-19 we have had to modify arrangements a bit.

"Rather than just sell real estate we want to build a community - establish something that people belong to and can participate in and have a feeling of ownership.

"We have done non-profit community clubs at our other projects, and it has been quite successful, and I think we are ready in Airlie Beach."

The new, fully-licenced clubhouse cafe is also due to open on Sunday, June 28 and will be available to non-players as well as players. Visitors will be able to play as guests.

The nine-hole, par three course is a short course especially designed to take up less time, with all holes being a par three and the longest hole being 120 metres. Players take three clubs on the course.

"It's designed for people who are time-poor and also for tropical climates - some people find playing for six hours very difficult in the heat, and tourists don't want to spend all day on the golf course," Mr Head said, adding there were also plans for an 18-hole golf course in the future.

PGA professional Andrew Farrow will continue as golf pro.
