Decorating homes for the holiday season is an activity most have learnt to enjoy since childhood.
For some, decorating with lights is something of an obsession. But most of us take a more conservative approach to our festive decorating.
Festive decor can be done in a chic, and tasteful way.
The first thing I would suggest is choosing a theme, and sticking with it.
Traditional Christmas decor tends to revolve around the colours of green and red. These traditional Christmas colours can of course be interpreted with a contemporary twist, but in our part of the world go easy on the winter slant.
Gold highlights are also evocative of Christmas. A gilded approach can be tasteful, as long as it's not overdone - avoid the gaudy, Trump Tower interpretation of gold.
A stylish shimmering bauble or tasteful gold-trimmed decor can add to celebratory ambience of the festive season.
Ironically, a rustic Christmas is totally contemporary. Mix textures such as wood, seashells and other natural fibres and create a more Australian version of Christmas.
Given Pantone named Greenery as the Colour of the Year for 2017, it makes perfect sense to add lashings of greenery to decorations to evoke a lush sense of life and all that we celebrate during the festive season.
