Julia sets sights on ‘ultra’ distance

TRAIL RUNNING: Julia Wheway, from Strathdickie, will attempt her very first ultra distance trail run on September 11 as part of the 10th anniversary of the Run the Great Whitsunday Trail event.

The 57.4km event is a first for the region and it will join the 28.7km event this year.

Having only been running for three years, Wheway has already achieved some great results, including the iconic and challenging 45km 6ft track marathon in the NSW Blue Mountains.

"I started running when I turned 40, I just wanted to get fit and lose weight. I began by slowing jogging 100 metres at a time, adding a little bit more every day. Within a year I found myself running my first half marathon in Port Douglas and my running really just went on from there," Wheway said.

"I am so excited to be amongst the first group to attempt the inaugural 57.4k event this year. It is going to be my biggest running challenge ever but it is great to know I will be running with some of the best ultra-runners in the country."

The event has limited numbers, with 150 in the 28.7km and 50 in the 57.4km. Registrations available at www.run whitsundays.com.au.
