Lake Proserpine to boost tourism
LAKE Proserpine could become a greater toursim hotspot, thanks to a grant application submitted by council.
At an ordinary council meeting in Proserpine last Wednesday, a Recreation Plan Grant Application for Lake Proserpine was put forward.
Part of the Sport and Recreation Planning Program, the joint venture between SunWater and council seeks to deliver a plan which responds to environmental issues while also meeting the needs of the community and tourism market.
The council report states how, with improved facilities, Lake Proserpine could have the potential to attract more tourists to the region with flow-on benefits including employment.
Division 3 Councillor John Collins said if the grant was to be accepted, it would be "big”.
"It's something I raised five years ago,” he said.
"It's fantastic we're getting to this stage of it now very quickly.
"I've said a couple of times in different places that this area has the potential to match the Northern Territory for fishing.”
Put through by Cr Jan Clifford and seconded by Cr Mike Brunker, the motion was carried seven nil.
