LIST: Residents urged to use local tradies in rebuild

NATURAL disasters are big business and as recovery efforts begin so too do insurance claims for households and companies.

Insured losses are expected to reach into the hundreds of millions of dollars, but will provide work for thousands of builders and other tradespeople assisting in Cyclone Debbie's aftermath.

As the amount of work increases, Mackay and Whitsunday residents are encouraging people to use builders from the region rather than relying on workers brought in from around the state.

Master Builders regional manager Mackay and Whitsunday Malcolm Hull said when people make an insurance claim, they can request to use their own builder rather than relying on the insurance company's preferred tradespeople.

"We encourage them to use local builders wherever possible,” Mr Hull said.

"If they don't already have someone in mind, they can search either using our find a builder website, or the Queensland Building and Construction Commission's building assistance register.

"No matter who you choose though, always ask for their license as during emergency situations some people try to take advantage of the situation.”

Mr Hull said when builders from the region are used, not only are they employed, but their supply chain also supports other businesses in the region which wouldn't be used otherwise.

Whitsunday based TM Murphy Constructions co-director Margie Murphy agreed and said their existing network of suppliers and tradespeople meant the flow on effects would help the region rebuild quicker.

She said they had been very busy since Cyclone Debbie and will have to employ more people in the next few months to meet demand.

"Unless it's a highly specialised job or there's lots of demand, it just makes sense that local builders should be used,” Ms Murphy said.

RACQ Insurance covers thousands of homes in the Mackay region and as of 1pm Monday had received 953 claims from Cyclone Debbie.

While RACQ has its preferred repairers, principal media advisor financial services Kirsty Clinton said as long as builders meet certain conditions and costs then people can nominate their own choice.

The QBCC building assistance register allows home owners to search for licenced tradespeople in their area who have registered their ability to work on Cyclone Debbie affected properties.

While not all QBCC licensed builders and tradespeople are listed, the range available should be enough to cover most jobs.

The list is continually updated and can be accessed here.
