Mum's $4 scratchie a big winner for Mackay man
THE post man delivered an extra special Christmas present this year to a man from Mackay - a $4 scratchie ticket that won the top prize of $50,000.
The winning man admitted he had to confess to his mother that when he received her Christmas gift in the mail this year, he couldn't help open the card and scratch the ticket ahead of Christmas Day.
"It came across as a bit of a surprise," the man said. "It was mailed up from Liverpool (NSW) as part of a Christmas present from my mum.
"We often have a family joke where we send each other scratchies that are already scratched off and include a little note like 'no good, better luck next time!' and even if I win she sends them up with the prize money saying 'look, you did well on this one!'"
He said this time though, his mum sent him one that wasn't scratched off.
"I couldn't wait until Christmas so I scratched it right away," he said. "But when I saw I'd won the top prize of $50,000, I thought I better own up and tell her.
"I've already gotten into trouble from mum for scratching it before Christmas day, it's my lack of patience I guess.
"She wanted me to mail the ticket down to her but I decided to get a flight at short notice and bring it here myself, so now she's got an unexpected visit from me before Christmas and we can spend some time together while I'm here."
In keeping with the spirit of Christmas, the Mackay man planned to spend most of the prize money on helping his mother.
"The prize money won't be spent on any one big thing, we plan to stretch it out a bit," he said.
"It's going to help out a great deal, and we've decided to spend it on doing up mum's house and maybe a holiday later next year.
"Mum plays three scratchies a week and she tends to win $5 or $10, but I've trumped her this time so she's going to have to try and beat me now!"
