A BBC news presenter has appeared on TV clutching a ream of  A4 paper, after grabbing it instead of his iPad.

Audiences were left bemused by the old-shcool adaptation of modern TV presenting, as Simon McCoy bravely soldiered on, presenting his piece to camera on police proposals for "drunk tanks".

The news was quickly shared, with BBC Radio1 Newsbeat reporter Steve Holden tweeting: "Why is @simonmccoy using a pack of printer paper as his iPad???"

Ever the professional, McCoy carried on as though nothing out of the ordinary had happened.

Later in the day he tweeted: "Stay classy, United Kingdom," he tweeted.

The BBC issued a statement, which read: "This morning as Simon McCoy was preparing to introduce this story, instead of picking up his tablet to hold as he went to air, he mistakenly picked up a ream of paper that was sitting next to it.

"In the rush of live news, he didn't have an opportunity to swap the items, so simply went with it.
