Fishing with... hot water outlet a good spot for barra
THIS week we go fishing with Jay Absalom, an aluminium refinery worker in Gladstone.
Name: Jay Absalom.
Profession: Worker at the aluminium refinery.
What have you got there? Nothing, just flicking some lures out. We've (with friend Travis Williams) only been here for about 10 minutes.
What are you trying to catch? We would take anything but pretty much barra fishing here.
They like the hot water (because of the outlet in Calliope River). I caught a lot of barra here last year but I've been a bit slack lately.
What's the biggest fish you have caught here? Probably a 1.14m barra. I caught it on soft plastics.
The fish don't get anything to eat if they swallow it but I get to eat them.
How did you eat it? I just fried it up in fillets or put it in the oven. Travis doesn't eat any fish so it's just a sport for him.
How did you learn to fish? I started fishing with my family when I was tiny. I grew up down in New South Wales.
What tips do you have to catch barramundi? You cast out the soft plastic as far as you can and wait until it hits the bottom.
Then you bounce it off the bottom until it hits again. Just keep doing that. They think it looks like live bait.
