Queensland man wins global guitarist title

DYLAN Reavey's talented fingers sent him to London to compete in an international competition at the weekend and now he has been named as Guitar World's 2019 Guitarist of the Year.

The 22-year-old from Sheldon has been playing guitar since he was eight and now composes his own jazz-style music, and won with his original song 'King Aura'.

Dylan's mother Maree Reavey said she was extremely proud of her son.

"He's been practising this piece (he performed) for six to eight hours a day for the past few months, so for him to win was like a weight had lifted off his shoulders," she said.

"He started out on acoustic guitar at St Luke's School at Capalaba and he did not stop practising.

"He would watch people and absorb it, and he had such a passion to learn.

"After that he went to Carmel College but then moved to Cleveland State High School where the teachers thought he had a natural music ability."

Reavey's music teachers encouraged him to take music further after he left school so he applied to study at The Conservatorium South Bank and got in.

In addition to his new title the talented musician has a Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz Guitar, and has been named a Strandberg artist and a G.O.D (Guitarist on Demand).

Reavey also works at the popular Binary Music business at Cleveland and owner Karen Henderson said he also tutored students and she was over the moon with his result but not surprised because of his talent.

"He certainly has amazing talent and great potential to go far in the music industry," Ms Henderson.

"He plays a lot of instruments so when he composes he plays all of them.

"He's got incredible technical skills - it's like a fusion of styles - jazz, rock and video games.

"I've played together with him and he is a very accomplished musician; he has great melodic abilities and a strong sense of rhythm.

"His colleagues say they think he's a legend."

Reavey, who is currently still in London, told Guitar World after his win that he had spent the year developing his style and playing gigs.

"I've come from metal roots as a lot of guys my age have - now I've found myself doing more jazz fusion that's a little bit more interesting rhythmically, harmonically and melodically," he said

"I haven't really played many games in the last couple of years but it's always been a hobby for me, so I just decided one day that I should just combine the two.

"I've already got a lot of experience composing game music so I thought I could do that and add guitar to that - fusion."

Reavey walked away from the competition with a PRS Silver Sky John Mayer Signature Electric Guitar.
