Volkswagen gets fit with R-Line range

VOLKSWAGEN is injecting extra athleticism into its line-up.

Similar to silver spoon brethren Audi with its "S" treatments, sporting packs called R-Line will be offered on an expanding range of vehicles.

We've seen dedicated R models previously from VW, but this athletic treatment is primarily skin deep.

There are no technical changes with the R-Line packages on Golf, Golf Wagon, Beetle and Tiguan, just superficial enhancements and some additional bling inside, whereas there are two standalone R-Line models with improved performance and higher output engines: Tiguan and Touareg.

Sampling the updated range this week, the Volkswagen R-Line treatment certainly cuts a striking figure. A particular stand-out is the Beetle which takes on a more masculine appeal.

Golf hatch and wagon variants are based on the Highline spec (103TSI and 110TDI) but gain 18-inch 'Salvador' alloy wheels, R-Line steering wheel with paddle shifters, R-Line interior trim complete with sport seats with R-Line badging, stainless steel pedals and sports suspension. On the outside they get a rear spoiler, and a body kit incorporating front and rear bumpers along with side sills.

When it comes to the Beetle, changes include unique front and rear bumpers, 18-inch 'Twister' alloy wheels,
gearshift paddles (auto models), sports instruments on the dashboard which display the boost pressure, oil temperature and a stopwatch.

Leading the Tiguan range is a R-Line powered by a 155kW petrol engine, with more aggressive front and rear bumpers, 18-inch 'Mallory' alloy wheels, leather trim, sports steering wheel with paddle shifters and R-Line front door sills. It also gets Adaptive Chassis Control which can switch between sport, comfort and normal suspension settings.

For those who want the R-Line package on 132TSI and 130TDI Tiguans, it gains all the same internal and external bling except for the chassis control function (sports suspension instead) while the seats are trimmed in Alcantara/cloth.

Leading the large SUV charge is the VW Touareg V8 TDI R-Line. It's easy to spot with unique R-Line design bumpers, oval tailpipes, 21-inch 'Mallory' alloy wheels, matte-black diffuser and rear roof spoiler.

Under the bonnet is a 4.2-litre V8 turbo diesel engine.

Inside the Touareg V8, the R-Line logo features on the front stainless steel door sill plates and on the heated leather rimmed multifunction steering wheel with gear shift paddles, stainless steel pedals and a leather gear shift knob with aluminium inserts.
